Regulated utilities provide essential services to nearly every household in the United States: energy to heat our homes, and power our industries; water, sewer, and waste services to maintain the health and vitality of our cities; and telecommunications to connect our community members and maintain our social well-being. The utility industry has been following a path of deregulation to allow increased competition, and more rapid adoption of technological innovation. However, certain aspects of these utility services cannot be provided safely and efficiency without regulatory oversight.
